Domaine Marcel Deiss
Bergheim
Family history begins in 1744 for Domaine Marcel Deiss in Bergheim.
Vineyard holdings have recently expanded from 27ha to 40ha, which most are farmed organic and biodynamically, newer holdings are currently in transition and have yet to receive certification. All are managed by father and son, Jean Michel & Mathieu Deiss, the vineyard holdings total 27ha farmed organically and biodynamically. Whole cluster pressings, indigenous yeasts, slow ferments usually in wood, and ageing on lees are the norm. A new range of ‘village’ wines compliment the ‘Alsace’ regional label, ‘premier’ & ‘grand cru’ single vineyard wines. Jean Michel is among the most influential avant-gardists in the wine world. He has convinced authorities to revise appellation rules and made us rethink the concept that a single variety reflects a given terroir. To him, a single grape is an instrument and not a symphony, the best reflection of the terroir is the balance of indigenous grapes “co-planted” in the vineyard. The entire vineyard is then harvested and fermented in concert. Wines from Domaine Marcel Deiss are always profound, and harmonious and speak a sense of place.
