Bodegas Viñátigo
La Guancha
An archipelago of Spain and located off the coast of Morocco, the Canary Islands are home to some very exciting wines! Landscape: mountainous, soils: volcanic & phylloxera-free, vineyards: high altitude with significant influence to extreme winds. Bodegas Viñátigo is on the island of Tenerife in the village of La Guancha. Juan Jesús Méndez, a proud native and 4th generation, has been overseeing operations for over 30 years and has been instrumental in increasing family holdings and importantly, identifying, preserving and reviving more than 80 different native grape varieties that were originally brought onto the islands in the 15th century. Now, the next generation has started looking after parts of the operation with Jorge Méndez in charge of viticulture and Celia Méndez in charge of marketing & other business aspects. Vineyards, which are a collection of micro blocks on the northwestern side of Tenerife, have always been sustainably farmed and are now fully organic with biodynamic principles incorporated since 2019. Vines are generally older and always hand-harvested with only the healthy grapes selected. Indigenous yeasts are preferred for fermentations with minimal intervention in the cellar. Amazingly pure and focused terroir wines from indigenous grapes like Listán Blanco & Negro, Negramoll, Tintella, and many more!
