Domaine Thibaud Boudignon

Savennières

Originally from Bordeaux, Thibaud was trained in Gevrey Chambertain at Domaine Philippe Charlopin before purchasing 3.5ha of land in Savennières and Anjou in 2009. Thibaud quickly built a reputation for his wines in Paris, landing them in several Michelin-starred restaurants (19 in total in France) before making it across the pond to major wine markets such as New York City and Montreal. We’re thrilled to be bringing one of the most exciting producers of Loire Valley Chenin Blanc today to British Columbia.

Meticulous attention to the health of his vines is the hallmark of his approach to winemaking and he immediately converted to organic farming when he took over in 2009. Planted in 1990 from massal selection, the vines grow on sandy, schist soils. His early success has allowed him to acquire some of the best sites in Savenni`eres, including Clos de Fremine and Clos de la Hutte (more on those below). The same care in the vineyards transfers to the cellar. Interestingly, during harvest, Thibaud holds all the juice at 3 degrees until harvest is complete and then he can shift his focus to winemaking. Talk about attention to detail! None of the wine undergoes malo as he believes it’s “cheating,” thus resulting in steely and linear wines, especially in cooler vintages. Mostly older barrels of varying sizes are used to age the wines with the intention to add texture not aromas. The resulting wines are a masterclass in Chenin Blanc, demonstrating complexities and nuances while achieving wines that are richly finessed and stylistically pure.
